Three Days and Three Nights in the Heart of the Earth

Matthew 26: ~ 17  Now on the first day of the Feast of the Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying to Him, “Where do You want us to prepare for You to eat the Passover?”
This meal was to be the Last Supper, with which you are all familiar. This was on Nissan 14, falling on a Tuesday that year. It was at this meal that the Lord's Supper, Communion through the bread and wine as His body and blood, was instituted, and at this meal Jesus foretold His imminent betrayal by Judas Iscariot, and predicted that even Peter would deny Him that night... 34 Jesus said to him, “Assuredly, I say to you that this night, before the rooster crows, you (Peter) will deny Me three times.”

He, afterward, went with His apostles to the garden of Gesthemane, to pray to His Father... Jesus was aware of what He was about to go through, and though He was very much afraid of the physical trials, He was most willing to do whatever was the will of His Father.
Luke 22: ~   41 And He was withdrawn from them about a stone’s throw, and He knelt down and prayed, 42 saying, “Father, if it is Your will, take this cup away from Me; nevertheless not My will, but Yours, be done.” 43 Then an angel appeared to Him from heaven, strengthening Him. 44 And being in agony, He prayed more earnestly. Then His sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground.

It was while he was at Gethsemane that Judas and a multitude arrived, took Him and led Him away to the high priest, Caiaphas.
He was questioned by Caiaphas and the Scribes and Elders throughout the night...
Matthew 26: ~ 73 And a little later those who stood by came up and said to Peter, “Surely you also are one of them, for your speech betrays you.”
74 Then he began to curse and swear, saying, “I do not know the Man!”
Immediately a rooster crowed.

It was now the next morning after the Passover meal. and Jesus was delivered to Pontius Pilate...
It was this day, Wednesday, that Jesus was crucified, died, and was buried... At twilight on Wednesday, Nissan 15, began the annual Sabbath (not the weekly Sabbath), and the Jews demanded that Jesus be buried before the beginning of that annual Sabbath.
Matthew 27: ~ 57 Now when evening had come, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who himself had also become a disciple of Jesus. 58This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded the body to be given to him. 59 When Joseph had taken the body, he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, 60 and laid it in his new tomb which he had hewn out of the rock; and he rolled a large stone against the door of the tomb, and departed.

So Christ died on the day after the Passover meal, and was buried at twilight. This was on Wednesday.

Christ was in the grave for three days and three nights, as He had foretold He would be. Early in His ministry,  when Jesus had confronted the money changers in the temple and had chased them out, also at Passover, he was asked by what authority...
John 2: ~ 18 ...What sign do You show to us, since You do these things?”  19Jesus answered and said to them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.”
20Then the Jews said, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and will You raise it up in three days?”
21But He was speaking of the temple of His body.  22Therefore, when He had risen from the dead, His disciples remembered that He had said this to them; ...
and later..
Matthew 12 ~ 40 For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

Being aware that Jesus had foretold the He arise would in three days, Pilate sets a guard at the tomb, thinking it to prevent some deception on the part of His disciples...
Mathew 27 ~ 62On the next day, which followed the Day of Preparation, the chief priests and Pharisees gathered together to Pilate, 63saying, “Sir, we remember, while He was still alive, how that deceiver said, ‘After three days I will rise.’ 64Therefore command that the tomb be made secure until the third day, lest His disciples come by night and steal Him away, and say to the people, ‘He has risen from the dead.’ So the last deception will be worse than the first.”
65 Pilate said to them, “You have a guard; go your way, make it as secure as you know how.” 66 So they went and made the tomb secure, sealing the stone and setting the guard.

Jesus remained in the tomb from Wednesday evening through Saturday... three days (Thursday, Friday, and Saturday) and three nights (Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday).
He was resurrected after twilight on Saturday night, and on Sunday (the day after the weekly Sabbath [Saturday]), his tomb was discovered empty.
Matthew 28: ~ 1 Now after the Sabbath, as the first day of the week began to dawn, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to see the tomb. 2 And behold, there was a great earthquake; for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat on it. 3 His countenance was like lightning, and his clothing as white as snow. 4 And the guards shook for fear of him, and became like dead men.
5 But the angel answered and said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. 6 He is not here; for He is risen, as He said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay. 7 And go quickly and tell His disciples that He is risen from the dead, and indeed He is going before you into Galilee; there you will see Him. Behold, I have told you.”
