| What does God want me to do for Him? |
| |
I think that every Christian that has not received a clear calling for a particular service wonders what it is that God intends for him or her... And with that question comes a temptation to decide for ourselves what service we can perform for God's glory and the furthering of His plan. We know our strengths, talents, preferences. It's so easy to slip into thinking that God has given us those things and helped us develop them throughout our lives because He intends for us to use those things in His calling for us.
Now, we think, "How can I use this talent for God as He intends me to?"
Or, "I really like to do (some thing). I'd really like use this thing in God's work!"
And so we start our minds to working on a plan to incorporate our talents or inclinations into an imagined calling to do just that...
I don't think it works like that. |
| Psalm 62:5 |
My soul, wait silently for God alone,
For my expectation is from Him. |

All of us, having accepted Christ as our Lord and Savior, have an immediate calling, and that's to walk with Him: to walk in the Light with every step, every day of our lives. That is a calling as important as any other we may ever receive. Although we might not think of it as a calling at all, to a great many, and probably the majority of us, that is probably the only calling we will ever hear. And that's okay!
It doesn't mean that we aren't doing God's work, even great things for God. It doesn't mean we aren't called and it doesn't diminish our calling. It just means that God hasn't the need to tell us all the details of what His pleasure with us is, or what works, unseen to us, that we are doing for Him. Remember that we are where God has placed us, and if we continue to walk in the light while we are where He has placed us, we are doing exactly what He wants us to do. That is the service we are called to.
That surely doesn't mean we should quit listening for God to speak to us concerning an additional calling, such as a particular place or circumstance He wishes us to be in, etc. We should always listen attentively for God to speak to us in any manner - through dreams, an actual voice we can hear, through the Spirit's urging, etc. (taking care to ascertain it is God speaking and not our hopeful expectations) - and then, of course, follow through if He chooses to make some part of His plan for us clear. I deliberately said PART of His plan, because I don't think He ever needs or desires to explain more than the minimum necessary to get a person to the place and happenstance He wants for him to be in. Most often I think, He doesn't reveal anything at all.
He simply get us to the place He wants us. By walking with His Spirit and presenting ourselves as heirs to His kingdom, we will be doing the exact works that God wants from us.
All of God's works, those appearing great and those appearing small, come from Him according to His plan. The appearance or not of greatness is in our eyes only, and surely not in God's reckoning. So don't despair if you hear no 'great' calling from Him, but be glad that God has called you to be His Son, for that is the calling to rejoice! |
| Luke: 10: |
17Then the seventy-two returned with joy and said, "Lord, even the demons are subject to us in your name."
18And He said to them, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. 19Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy; and nothing by any means hurts you. 20Nevertheless, do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rather rejoice because your names are written in heaven." |

Most of us will never receive what has the appearance of a 'great' calling, but if you do or don't, that's not a thing to rejoice in.
Rejoice that your name is written in heaven. |
